# Xetra

Xetra is an electronic trading venue operated by Deutsche Börse for shares and other securities, where orders can be matched through auctions and continuous trading.

## What it means

Xetra is a German electronic trading venue operated by Deutsche Börse. It brings together orders for eligible securities, including stocks, under published trading rules. A company's shares may trade on Xetra and on other venues; a Xetra quote is therefore a quote from a particular venue, not necessarily a universal price for that stock.

Xetra is not the DAX. The DAX is a stock-market index; Xetra is a place where securities trade. Nor is Xetra a broker: an investor submits an order through a broker, which handles access and execution.

## How it is calculated

Xetra itself is a venue, so it has no formula. A useful calculation for a Xetra quote is the *quoted bid-ask spread*: the difference between the best displayed ask and bid at a particular moment.

`Quoted spread (EUR/share) = best ask (EUR/share) − best bid (EUR/share)`

- **Best ask:** the lowest displayed price at which someone is offering shares on the venue, in euros per share.
- **Best bid:** the highest displayed price at which someone is offering to buy shares on the venue, in euros per share.
- **Quoted spread:** the difference, in euros per share. To express it as a percentage, divide the spread by the bid-ask midpoint and multiply by 100.

A displayed quote is a snapshot, not a guaranteed execution price. Available quantity, order type, timing and changes to the order book can affect the fill. A stock's actual tick size can also constrain which prices are permitted.

## Worked example

Suppose, hypothetically, a stock quoted on Xetra has a best bid of **€49.95** and a best ask of **€50.05**, with at least 100 shares displayed at each price.

1. The quoted spread is `€50.05 − €49.95 = €0.10 per share`.
2. The midpoint is `(€49.95 + €50.05) ÷ 2 = €50.00`.
3. The spread as a percentage of the midpoint is `€0.10 ÷ €50.00 × 100 = 0.20%`.
4. At the displayed ask, buying 100 shares would have a share-price amount of `100 × €50.05 = €5,005`, before any broker charges or other costs.

The bid and ask would be €10 apart across 100 shares. That is a comparison of displayed prices, **not** a prediction that an immediate round trip would cost exactly €10: quotes can change, and execution may occur at different prices. The example assumes an eligible order and sufficient displayed quantity.

## Why it matters before you trade

Venue details help put an execution estimate in context. Before placing an order, a pre-trade check can consider the stock's trading currency, the applicable market hours, the visible spread, liquidity and the size of the proposed order relative to typical volume. A larger order may reach beyond the quantity available at the best displayed price.

If an investor's account is denominated in US dollars but the trade is priced in euros, a currency conversion may also affect the account-level cost. The exchange's quoted spread and a broker's commission are separate concepts. A limit order can set a price boundary, but it does not guarantee a fill.

## How PreTrAIde uses it

Xetra is among the major European exchanges covered by PreTrAIde's stock pre-trade analysis. A user builds a basket with a buy or sell side, quantity and execution conditions for each stock. Before any order is placed, PreTrAIde returns a GO, NO-GO or MODIFY verdict for the basket and each line, with a model-estimated success probability, risk assessment, suggested execution strategy and plain-language reasoning.

Its quantitative layer estimates bid-ask spread, participation in daily volume and market impact, among other measures. These are **estimates**, not a live Xetra order-book quote or a promised fill. PreTrAIde is analysis software, not a broker; users place any trades themselves through their own broker. Its verdicts support a decision rather than recommend a trade.

## Common mistakes

- **Confusing Xetra with the DAX:** one is a trading venue; the other is an index.
- **Treating a displayed ask as a guaranteed purchase price:** the quote or available quantity may change before execution.
- **Assuming all venues show the same price:** quotes and liquidity can differ by venue and time.
- **Equating spread with total cost:** commissions, market impact and, where applicable, currency conversion are separate considerations.
